Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India is categorized into different slabs (0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%). When selling products online, you need to know whether the price you are charging is GST Inclusive (tax is already inside the price) or GST Exclusive (tax needs to be added on top).
Formula for adding GST (Exclusive)
To add GST to a base amount, multiply the amount by the GST rate percentage.
GST Amount = (Original Cost × GST Rate) / 100
Total Price = Original Cost + GST AmountFormula for removing GST (Inclusive)
If a product sells for ₹1000 inclusive of 18% GST, the actual base price is lower.
GST Amount = Total Price - [Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))]
Original Cost = Total Price - GST AmountFrequently asked questions
What GST rate should I charge as an online seller in India?
It depends on the product category (HSN/SAC code), not on the fact that you sell online. Most goods fall under 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% slabs — for example, apparel under ₹1,000 is usually 5%, most general merchandise is 18%. Check your product's HSN code on the GST portal, or use the 18% default (the most common slab) if you are unsure.
What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive pricing?
A GST-exclusive price is the base price before tax — GST is added on top at checkout. A GST-inclusive price is the final price the customer pays, with GST already built in. Use "Add GST" when you have your cost price and want the sale price; use "Remove GST" when you know the final sale price and need to back out the tax for your invoice.
How is GST split into CGST, SGST, and IGST?
For sales within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — e.g. 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For sales to a buyer in a different state, the full amount is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) instead. Your invoicing software should apply this automatically based on the shipping address.
Do I need a GSTIN to sell products online in India?
If your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for services, lower thresholds for some special-category states), GST registration is mandatory. Many marketplaces and payment gateways also require a GSTIN regardless of turnover. Sellers below the threshold can operate without one but cannot charge or claim GST.
